Social Media Strategies for Academics

While social media are great tools to communicate academic knowledge to a broad audience of non-experts, using such media for this purpose comes with particular challenges. What topics are suitable for an audience of non-experts? How to negotiate nuance and complexities? What social platforms work best? This course offers strategies that help scholars reach out to a broad online audience.

Target group

Academic staff from Postdocs to Full Professors affiliated to Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Center.


This workshop provides an overview of the possibilities offered by social media and how to use them more efficiently. You will learn effective social media strategies are and apply them to your own research and discipline. Facilitated by experienced instructors, this course combines a hands-on approach and discussion with peers.


The course encompasses three sessions. The first is open to all and provides a general introduction to using social media for academic purposes. If you decide to continue you can register for two more sessions. The second session is hands-on and filled with a range of practical exercises. The third and final meeting will take place a few weeks later and is aimed at evaluating and fine-tuning your own experience using social media as an academic.

The course amounts to 8 hrs in total, including attendance, preparation and homework.

Costs & cancellation

PhD candidates at Leiden University: no charge
Researchers at Leiden University: 100 euro

Our cancellation rules apply to all courses. Cancellation after the above mentioned enrolment date means we have to charge a cancellation fee of € 100.
